The Spice Village, is set literally, in the midst of a plantation, along the periphery of the Periyar National Park, about 200 kms from Cochin. Spice Village is a laid back and homely place, with the protection of nature and the environment one of its core values. The Resort is set in 15 acres of spice gardens at an elevation of 3000 feet above sea level, giving it a pleasant year round climate. An eco-friendly resort, it has won several awards, including national eco-friendly and heritage awards and state pollution control awards.
The Resort has 52 cottages, set in 8 acres of tamed forest. The architecture is inspired by the jungle dwellings of the area, and care has been taken to use the same materials in construction.Deliberately, there is no air-conditioning,no television and no piped music. Cottages have simple pine furniture and plain terracotta flooring, in keeping with the environment. Most cottages have private sit-outs, and some even have small private gardens, complete with private park benches.
The Resort has two restaurants, the main restaurant, which has a large verandah, and also arrangements for al-fresco dining, featuring sumptous buffet options , that celebrate the best and most varied traditions of Kerala cuisine and then there is the Tiffin Room , which serves light snacks throughout the day. The Tiffin Room, is furnished with rosewood chairs and tables, that are actually restored antiques. There is also a well stocked bar, where rare hunting photographs jostle for space with conservation documents and pictures of royalty.
In addition to a fully equipped Ayurveda center, facilities at the Spice Village include an outdoor Swimming pool, a Billiards table, Tennis and Badminton courts .The Resort can also arrange guided walks to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, as well as escorted trips to the nearby Spice plantations. From the Spice Village, it is also possible to visit a tribal village, for a first-hand experience of a way of life that's fast vanishing from the modern world. Depending on the season, other adventures activities like fishing and river rafting too are possible from the Spice Village. In addition, there are regular cooking demonstrations, where guests are invited to particapate and try their hands at local cooking as well.
The fully equipped Ayurveda Center at the Spice Village is headed by a fully qualified and thoroughly experienced Doctor, who after detailed consultation, decides on diets and treatments for guests. They believe that an air of mental peace and inner harmony is a necessary part of the therapeutic process, hence, the massage and therapy rooms overlook a lush, yet secluded garden, fostering calm and filling the room with aromatic scents. The Ayurveda center offers many treatments, for both health and beauty, including massages, and shirodhara (where oil is dripped onto the ‘'third eye'' or forehead).
