Dambulla

Dambulla is Sri Lanka’s city of the ancient. The major tourist destination in Sri Lanka is just 5 hours from the bustling capital city of Colombo. Owing to its location, it is a commercial destination and a popular tourism hub. Historic, intriguing and cultural, it is one of the must-visit gems of the island. In fact it is one of the places that truly represent the country’s rich heritage.

Making a place on the world map, Dambulla is widely known for its UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the Golden Temple and the Buddhist Cave temple. The well-preserved cave temple complex is one of the best on Sri Lanka. Though almost 3000 years old, it has very nicely kept its essence intact till date. Dambulla’s Golden Rock Temple comprises of cave monastery and five sanctuaries is known for stunning cravings. The caves are adorned in beautiful sculptures, paintings of Lord Buddha and an impressive 45-foot long sleeping Buddha statue. Beside the world heritage site, the city’s other tourist sites include Iron Wood Forest, Rose Quartz Mountain, and the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium which is famous for its in just 167 days. 

Another unmissable treasure to explore in Dambulla is Sigiriya’s ancient rock fortress. Known as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’ it is one of UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the world. The massive rock structure which is about 660 ft high and historically had a palace on top of it. Visitors are allowed to hike on top of the plateau and witness a breathtakingly beautiful view from the place.  Some of the local attractions include the Popham’s Arboretum, a wildlife zoo where the visitors can go on jungle safaris, the Rangiri international, a cultural and sports centre and the Jathika Namal Uyana, a widespread of a garden embodied with beautiful flowers.

Being the vegetable supplier of the country has its advantages, that one can buy the farm-fresh veggies from the vendors at minimalistic prices. There is also an ancient prehistoric burial site that is of great archaeological importance, and which also recalls the tale of various historical stories.
